UMPC the 2nd (large) PocketPC ?
Looking at the Pda and cellular convergence i started to think, a long time ago, that the pda models, not including a phone service, had to become a real Mini PC and i created a page (Pda Future) to follow the evolution of a such possibility. The launch of the UMPC by Intel/Microsoft could confirm my opinion if we consider that at the same time a great brand as HP no longer will produce the classic PDA and another great producer as Asus start to sell umpc devices instead to substitute his last standard Pda model. You can find the same opinion in this article also. But it is not really and actually so . The Dream of Bill Gates created only a new type of Mobile device without any willing to consider it an evolution of a pocketpc standard. or (eventually) a devolution of the Tablet PC model. The result was a device that now is too big to substitute a standard Pda, too expensive and with a too short battery life. These are three point that will obliged Microsoft and the producers of this kind of mobile unit to revise their target. Consider here the new gadget dimension related to 2 possible actual competitors.it is a full mobile PC but you will need also an empty, large pocket :)
it is only few mm bigger of a 4' screen PPC (it offer a 5' screen and a sliding keyboard) see HERE
it is a thin and light device with a good color screen at hi resolution but is a web tablet only.See HERE So you may ask yourselves why i call this object the 2nd Pocket PC. As i said, i know well that this in new class of devices. The name of second PocketPC will be justified by the way that, i assume, this device will follow to reach its commercial diffusion. Or you forgot the first Pocket PC, big, expensive and with a short battery life if compared to the Palms unit ? The UMPC will have the same problem to solve even if its competitor will be not a firm (as Palm) but the market. For the moment as i read in several site's the UMPC appear to be a Paper's Tiger.and as you can read HERE also. ATTENTION: Due to the fact the all devices in question are for the moment announced only but non available, the specifications also are not totally available and may be incomplete, wrong also, and to adjust.
