The future PDA has 2 faces
Sometime ago i posted a page, in this site, showing the title "2 faces for PDA in the future?" This page's title now attests that the argument of that page was correct and that the thing still to define is what kind of devices, models etc. will represent this evolution. So in order ti continue to trace this evolution and its future we need to revise what is or will be available in this field. Many of the models previously shown in my first page (i.e. any device that could confirm the idea and the creation of a Pda to use as a real PC) have been disappeared and others have been never launched owing to several reasons: high prices, limited features notwithstanding the declared targets. Anyway some of these models (few) have been really commercialized after a long waiting also and can still represent the concurrents of the new announced devices. To continue to follow the development of the future Pda, without consider here the devices produced by the convergence of mobile phone and pda that is the other Face of this question we may consider at this point: 1) the UMPCdisplay 7.0' (This is the Bill Gates dream) even if has not been presented really as an evolved classic PDA. This is not the place to analyze the various models and their news as i dedicated to these UMPC devices a full page, that you will find following the link. We can here follows and think about the possibility of the umpc models to succeed. For the moment Microsoft indicated only the detailed characteristics to follow to realize what they call Ultra Mobile PC and we must say that few of the old producers started to built this item (strictly speaking we can say Asus only). In addition there are too many target missing as battery's autonomy, price and we may add also a dimensional factor that, even if a 7' display makes more easy to see and use the screen) does not increase the mobility. Well i think that the choice of the 7' measure is also due to save price to produce the device using screen already produced for mobile media player and so on even if this does not help to save power also.. We must also note that the recent announce about a UMPC version using coming Vista instead of the previous XP can cause some confusion about the real target of this units so that it could cause an initial flop as the one of the tabletPC standard. The only sure thing is the announce of the UMPC has indirectly legitimized all that products, with similar features, that were considered only limited miniPC as there was no specific market. 2) Among these last ones, olds or news, that gain their position in the market after the Microsoft Origami announce notwithstanding their limits, price and/or defects you can find the units listed below, particularly if they are already available while many of the future UMPC have been previewed or announce only. OQO
display 5.0' Note : This is a long waited device, finally commercialized and that now reached the version 01 It was born as a real miniPC and at the same time as a Pda evolution and, if you see the actual market it may be also an alternative to the UMPC as designed by Microsoft. The object shows some solutions coming from pda world (the sliding keyboard for example) and many available communication's ports in a real mobile dimension. The weight unfortunately is not so light as a Pda and the same is also for the price but anyway the new umpc do not appear better for the moment. This unit has, i think, its own market but will never reach the consumer market. display 4.5' Note: Sony is not new, using the Vaio logo, to experiment and produce miniPC units. The ones previously commercialized never succeed totally as the producer hoped creating the relative dedicated market. The unit has not presented as an antagonist of the umpc but it is , this also, a device that can get some advantages from the MS mobile PC, obviously if it will be for the user a valid device. (even if for this also you will need a large pocket) Commercialized: YES . Price 1800 USD(1400 Eur) O.S. display 4.5' Will it be the Killer of the UMPC idea by Microsoft ? It may be for the features, but only with a cheapest price. http://handhelds.engadget.com/2006/07/07/hands-on-with-sonys-would-be-umpc-killer-the-ux180p/ in the meantime you can find here several reviews of the handset parts (keyboard, screen and also form factor and tips and tricks) http://pocketables.blogspot.com/2006/07/review-vaio-ux180p-keyboard.html#links http://pocketables.blogspot.com/2006/07/review-vaio-ux180p-orientation.html#links http://pocketables.blogspot.com/2006/07/review-vaio-ux180p-screen.html#links http://pocketables.blogspot.com/2006/07/reclaiming-what-is-yours.html#links http://pocketables.blogspot.com/2006/07/ux-tips-and-tricks.html#links http://www.mobiletechreview.com/sony_ux180/Sony-Vaio-UX180P.htm 3) To the UMPC and to the others similar devices we may also add some particular unit that we may consider not conventional devices. I define these so owing to their origin that is not neither the Pda not the PC type. These devices could be the base to produce and commercialize some real unit to substitute the old, well known pda but with features totally different from the UMPC type Nokia 770
display 4.1 See HERE the dedicated page Note:When Nokia launched this model perhaps they haven't any idea to go over the declared 'Web Tablet' name. Will be due to the O.S. (linux) in a world populated of Win devices or for the good hi resolution display and the ability to perform many things with good results that this unit succeed over others handsets. The coming upgrade that will add more services will make this model more attractive and, even if this unit was not born to substitute a pda or as concurrent with the UMPC may become the right device for user that do not need Office set and ....do not like Microsoft. (at the moment there is not a lot of software, but you can find many programs....all free usually) Commercialized: YES . Price 350 Eur O.S. display 4.3 Note: This device will be launched in Japan (on July 2006 ?) so, if it will not be distributed 'worldwide' may not be an interesting unit for our market. Anyway the Blufin has some characteristic that can justify to show it here. Its form factor (weight and dimension) and the use of an HD 30gb along with the O.S. S.O. Windows Mobile 5.0 makes of it a real evolved pda.(but there is a touch screen ?) I think that could also be a good starting point for a future UMPC with, perhaps, a larger 5.0' screen. Note: This is a particular device as it was not borne to miniaturize a PC or as evolution of the PPC, but to merge two different O.S. into a little mobile unit in order to use at the same time 2 differnt types of applications.
