Anyway what you are reading above is already history. 

Even if we can consider as real convergent object the ' Smartphone' it is without any doubt susceptible to collect more wide consents
from part of customers, we may name, not specialized. The reason probably is dictated from the common likeness with a cellular one,
the lightness and the minor delicacy regarding the models Pda phone. Whatever the reasons may be, these or other anchor, the facts
seem to demonstrate that the convergence and the unification has had to endure one stop. 

On October 2004 this article declared that:  Microsoft Smartphone platform will disappear in 2-3 years.
On that time the current O.S. was WM2003 S.E delivered in two separate versions: for Smartphone  and for Phone Edition (P.E.)
Well, we can clearly see that during these years, with Palm missing from the marked and the good results of  S.O. WM the idea 
to discontinue the Smartphone could be the consequence of the Phone edition models powered by Windows Mobile System succeed
over the Smartphone.
But the facts show that it is not so.
After the recent announce about the new O.S. version  WM 6  Microsoft still offers his product in 3 different versions .
The Standard version is, another time, the Smartphone version that had to disappear.

 What lacks therefore to continue the convergence way and to be able to arrive to new kind of device? 
Of sure one of the aspects it is a common and uniform method of input. 
Currently they exist devices to use with the numberpad only, to use with T9, with various types of writing acknowledgment, 
useless vocal commands, complete keyboards usable with a single hand, or complete keyboards doubled also from a NumPad
and, naturally, also the classic Stylus classic sometime placed side by side in a  Pda with a selection systems and tracking 
type PC mouse.
                          

If we consider  that such systems now are applies in such way that may become difficult also to make the distinction between
the old categories of Pda/phone and Smartphone then, instead of an effect of convergence you obtains a confusion effect only.
However from this confusion a model emerges that could carry to the start a convergence also for the interaction and input system
I refer to the Apple iPhone. I do not want to enter with respect to many innovative characteristics that this model introduces but to
one only: the tactile screen. This solution seems to have already attracted, even if realized from everyone in various way,
interests of others manufacturers and of sure it allows, with the use without stylus, creating whichever graphical personalized input 
that, once applied from the majority of the interested ones, has to be considered a common way of interaction with the mobile
device.
And this, once again could the device's form to the convergenge 


Second Part 

What it would have to be noticed is that me they seem to exist two various positions in relation to the concept of convergence
of these devices. I mean to say is that there is who thinks by now caught up the convergence (understanding simply as 
possibility to use a pda/phone to the same way of a top cellular phone) and therefore he thinks that now in order 
to emerge in the market must be aimed at valid device with good characteristics in order to exceed the contenders 
(autonomy, sensibility, lightness, easy use) and made also to offer, in order to strike the adversaries, a good price. 
( in short, for convergence obtained we aim for a widest market) 

This could be the HTC strategy that has created, first of all, a model that tried to accept the challenge with cellulars 
(the HTC- Magician) and, thence, model after model, has created devices that have forced the cellular producers to add to 
theirs smartphone Wifi and other services in order it is not made to detach from the Pda/phone models and now differentiates 
to the maximum the offer and reduces the cost of some models, with complete characteristics, while  the other producers 
include similar models in the top range and price. 

This formulation is not shared from other producers that unavoidablly interpret the final convergence like realization of a 
conceptually new object (and of totally new shape) that it is asserted, to caught up convergence, cancelling every previous 
note differentiation between mobile devices.. 

The road can be that one, already said, feed from Apple and in parallel from other constructors. 
It comes in fact by replacing the system of Input, the quantity of memory available, and to automatize of functions that, 
if they do not influence in immediate way on the shape suggest various interpretations, for the moment only pointed out. 
An example of this is to offer 2  different keyboards/keypads sliding from unit's sides in addition to the a frontal Pad, 
as the Nokia n95 . Concept expanded strongly by Samsung,   
even if unapplied up to now, to offer a cellullar phone to use as Pda and also Media & Play Game at the same time
only changing the side and the input pad. (this system has been also partially available for the coming HTC Kaiser) .

A tendency already evidenced is wider uses of the screen used in indifferienzata way like output and input even doubling of 
the availability and the dimension with a touchscreen for input and not only and a normal screen for output.
A sample is the BlackBox by BenQ-Siemens, a black bar showing multiple input functions thru the touch and output screen

 extended by Polygon  while Nokia 

gets the original concept and, to have all the possibility, adds also a mobile keyboard like HTC Advantage style.

 Near future could be one solution, even if I consider it an attended shape of compromise in of the screen flexible still in evolution. 
         
Same consideration is feasible for the memory. 
Micro the HD that offer good ability are sure an attended more immediate solution waiting that the HD solid state allow to 
eliminate to the maximum the mobile parts of the device.

Third Part

The evolution times, in Pdas field, stretch continuously and, consequently, what it seemed the future is quickly between 
our hands like running object. This is the reason of this continuation to the analysis of the form according to a convergence
to reduce the little remaing difference between Pda, Smartphone (or cellular advanced phone). 
We must consider that the first aspects cited at the beginning of the previous Second Part are already verifiable. I refer to the
commercialization of units with multiple sliding keyboards as we can find in the Pantech Duo,
or double keyboards (only one sliding) as per Htc S730or Samsung i760
However, although users appear to still appreciate the presence of the keyboard (extensive or less) the same one will not have 
in future many chances. It is sure already that the big wave of the models that take inspiration from the Touch, iPhone etc started
and these models seem to have influenced some future models of the producers . See some examples to begin from Sony Ericsson.

However, the devices with  wide screen and virtual keys, do not seem to still have convinced the majority of the customers, and 
the plan of Nokia named Haptikos to offer to whom like keyboard the same one, in shape virtual, on screen but equipped however 
of a typical sensitive feedback of the true mechanical keyboards coul be the winning action. 
While it is proceeded to affinare and experiencing new systems of input, the output does not go beyond some screen with higher
resolution (you can see Eten or i.Mate) but this evolution even if conceptually previewed is not such to modify the shape of the 
object carrying real advantages to the use of the same one. 
I am sure however that the year in arrival will show meaningful innovationes. Stay Tuned
