(MAGICIAN) THE EVOLUTION
If you read my page about the original HTC Magician you can note that the creation of the page has not inspired to the device's success obtained under any brand used only. One of the reason was also that the Magician has been the first device commercialized showing the characteristics and dimensions ( 2.8' screen, dimensions like an usual cellular phone) that you can later find in many others products and models. The above word were the ones i used to start the previous page created to monitor the evolution of the pda/phone Magician type. I think that may be useful to define what i mean with 'Magician Type'. You can find in my site another page titled 'Form and convergence' that analyzes the form of these new convergent devices. One of the two most used form is the one origined by the Magician (the second is instead the one started with the Palm Treo that appears to be also appreciated by the user). Anyway i can say that the model originated from the Magician's form factor are the ones that more maintain the old pda appeals even if now can be used easily and efficiently as a common mobile phone. The other type of device also works fine ( you can use it and its keyboard by a single hand) but you have to accept a square screen (at low resolution) and may be that the frontal qwerty keys are not always so good to use. Well, we can now start to see the evolution of the new Magician style device but we have to consider a new caractheristic also. When Magician start to be delivered the users (even if they appreciated this device) pointed out some missing items (too small memory, missing WiFi and Keyboard) this caused to separate evolution way for this models. The first maintains the basic form of the original phone/pda. The second, to settle the user request for the keyboard without exceed the optimal dimension, was born inspired by some old device that used the side sliding key board as the following:bSquare pda OR

These choice created three types of devices that we may consider as evolutions of the old HTC model (including in this list also models not produced by HTC but inspired to their first pda/phone) I shall use some pictures to iconize the evolution iter (you will be able to use them to reach more details about the selected models)

SORRY FOR THE DELAY of the AsusThe Asus unit was presented before the first news about the HTC Magician, if i remenber well. Unfortunately, owing to the long time elapsed before to make this model available, caused the presentation of an obsolete p505 model in a market where much more modern units were already available Thence the model has been commercialized but..... What can i say? The P505 'WAS' a good model and not for its old age Antenna. We can say that this has been immediately the unit developed to substitute the Magician. First of all because, with the same form factor, this device adds some of the features that user likes, as the full sliding qwerty keyboard and the required WiFi connection. But do not forget the WM 5.0 O.S as the 128Mb of not volatile memory.OR

As HTC products are usually distributed by many different Brands. In this case also, we can see more versions of the Wizard that can extend the offer of this unit to differentiate the Client's offer. You can see here some of the Wizard version As said above, the innovation with the highest impact is without any doubt the side sliding qwerty keyboard.
(a true qwerty keyboard even if within its dimension) even if i think we have to wait some time to verify if this mobile part will be really useful without problem. As already said HTC has not been the first to apply this solution on a pda.
The Wizard (identifies also as HTC Prodigy) is entlited to be the substitute of the Magician as HTC has been able to add many news without modify the main characteristics, dimensions and weight of the original device. We can only say that the line appears less... linear than the previous one unit. To know better this item we can quickly see some details of both the phone pdas. But there is a thing that quite differs from the original device if you see the HTC Wizard (whatever brand is used). The Cpu of this unit. While the Magician used an Intel PXA272 at 416Mhz (that surely represented much appeal for the user than the Cpu at 195Mhz used with the HP h6340) the Wizard uses a new TI Omap 850 that, as said about the HP device, will arise many doubts in any potential buyer that search Hi Performance. It is true, the Cpu has a low speed but this hardware (dual core, i.e. a double processor dedicated to connections/phone and to the other functions respectively) could surprise the user, and do not forget that unit uses the new O.S. Windows Mobile 5.0. All thing to verify in the field, obviously :) anyway the result of Mobile Review comparison show that:

THE TRUE HEIR of the Magician look HTC Prophet was revealed in exclusive by msmobiles
You can find HERE some real pictures of the mentioned pda. The HTC Prophet Windows Mobile 5 PPC Phone Ed. appears to be really, for its dimensions and form factor the real evolution of the original Magician. You can view HERE the confirmation of what i am saying. In addition to the form factor this model maintain the small and slim dimension of the original Magician and also the metallic case. If we add WM 5.0 O.S and BT version 2.0/Wifi connections this unit appears really to be the substitute of the Magician for all the users that do not like (or do not need) the Keyboard. Well, with reference to the previous HTC model we can note an Omap cpu at 200 Mhz (lowest speed), same memory dimension, lowest battery capacity even if WM 5.0 may help. HERE you can find a quick but complete review of the HTC Prophet commercialized as QTek S200 model and also as iMate JAMin, Dopod 818pro, SPV m600 . We have to say that this model appears to be a real update of the original Magician only as we may note the adding of the WiFi, the version 2.0 of the BT but others modificaion also that do not make it surely better of the original model.(Omap cpu at 200 Mhz, same memory dimension, lowest battery capacity even if WM 5.0 may help. The conclusion is that the Prophet is quite attractive even if some particulars have been not upgraded at their best. Eten M500 - Torq P100 - Everex E900
As already said, even if the HTC Magician started a sort of fashion (i think) of mini palm/Phone it is not correct, notwithstanding the HTC model opened the trip, to consider the HTC only. Eten, that it is not new as producer of palm/Phone devices has been able to create a device 'Magician Type' that may be easily considered a valid alternative. As i wrote previously or you like the Magician line or you will never love it. Well, even if it is only a marginal thing, also the form of the Eten may be considered a true esthetic alternative.
The device has its own personality, you can still prefer the HTC model, but this phone Edition is a good item even if is it is slightly bigger. We may check a double list as already done with the previous model and so you can verify the analogies with the HTC device. The demostration is to find, for example a 128Mb Rom by default a sligtly bigger battery. Even if the Cpu Samsung runs at 400Mhz and the is bigger the authonomy of both device is about the same. (may be for a less optimized system) but surely the Rom at 128Mb is a good ace for this model. I refer to the upgrade of the devica to the new Microsoft WM 5.0 O.S. that can hel you to mantain the unit value without the need for you to buy the future M600 that will offer WM 5.0 natively. Well, the Eten is anyway a good alternative if we add also to the offer its cradle and a good quantity of software at a competitive price. THE SMARTPHONES Plus inspired by HTC Magician model
Quanta ( O2 XDA Atom )
Even if the producer is not HTC but QUANTA, the model, that is now available in the market, represents a further step to go nearest to the smartphone offering some additional functions, already used in cellular phone but not present in handhelds 'Magician style'
This model has a reduced dimension if you compare it with the original Magician. Measures are only 102 x 58 x 18.5 mm and the display is only 2.7' but a 320x240 and showing 262000 colors. Notwithstanding the smaller dimentions the unit offers a 2.1 Mpixel photocamera, GSM/GPRS/EDGE and also Wifi and BT. Totally new for a pda phone is the radio FM and the double speaker in the front that are characteristics that you can find easiest in smartphone. In this case you do not find the keyboard usually more requested by the handhelds users while we have to remember, that using WM 5.0, it is possible to use this small device using a single hand. This model appears to be available only thru O2 in Asia named XDA Atom and pricedfrom USD.800 to 1400 still to define within the end of the year. you can read HERE a preview from which i got these notes but you can also see HERE the first pictures. Well, it is an opinion of mine , but the device appears really valid so i will not be surprised to see it sold worlwide also even if during the next year. The device that you see above is, without any doubt, the most awaited phone pda. This was due to the UMTS section added that made this device the first Umts pda/phone with dimentions that are quite compatible with many of already commercialized umts mobile phones. This unit is also the first one created and commercialized while HTC starts to offer directly his products. In this connection we can find two different hardware look even if the hardware itself appears to be the same. The first (picture on the right) is the result of the original project (named Hermes) that you can find distributed, for example, by Orange under name SPV M3100, the second shown on the left is the revised look of the unit distributed by HTC directly (named TyTN). From the first rumors about the use and the performance of the TyTN model it appears that the unit runs fine. That it the same for the oiginated Hermes units except for a little Hardware bug that you find detailed HERE TRINITY: Magician heir of 3rd generation P3600
This device has been only announced and it is not commercialized for the moment. We can say that this is one of the direct heir of the original magician's look (i.e pda without sliding keyboard) For the moment we find on the web few photos and rumors only. This is the official presentation by HTC. Integrated GPS, as per previous rumors, will not be included (for this you will need the Artemis model of HTC) but the device will allow a lot of connettivities GSM,GPRS,EDGE,UMTS and, owing to the umts, will use a 400Mhz CPU like the original Magician as the slowest Omap (200Mhz) appear to be unable to handle the video calls. On the paper this appears to be a very interesting device for the ones that do not like or need the sliding keyboard. The previous and this page was born dedicated to the first example of pda and phone convergence that was quite acceptable and to the others units, developed by the same producer (HTC) an others performing the further evolution required to consider the pda with phone section competitive with the cellular phones. But we cannot ignore that, on the form factor of the Magician, have been produced also some units that offer additional services. This is the case of the GPS that we can find added by other producers than HTC in their pda/phone. Well this is quite far from the original idea of Magician that was only a simple pda/phone but will be surely a new target for the producers. It is only a little step forward (when we will see an acceptable TV service also in the same form factors unit ?) When this will happen we no longer have a navigator, communicator and so on but a real connector to join us to the world. It will be a better thing? It is really difficult to know. A GUY WHO KNOW HIS STREET Mitac Mio A701
The Mio a701 is an outsider in this roundup about the heirs of the original Magician. To say the truth this model i the only other unit that can be compared with a standard mobile phone in addition of some of the HTC model. This is due to the screen reduced to 2.7' (like the model HTC Athena) that with the use of the virtual tough number pad made of this device a pretty candy bar phone. What you can see in the left corner reveals the GPS system included and with other service BT,GSM,GPRS could be a good unit. This item now is available and, even if i consider its' constructions not so good as some Htc units it has surely many caractheriscs to be appreciated in the market and it is a quite successful model.
Do not forget that it was one of the first item to put togheter GPS and Phone in a form factor of a common mobile phone.HERE you can find some real pictures Another fully integrated device Eten G500As already said ETEN appear to be in the field the best competitor of HTC if se consider the phone/Pda. The main thing that appears to be of lowest quality with reference to the HTC units is the assembling of the unit (and this is valid usually for Mitac device also) . Anyway Eten has been the first to reply to HTC phone/pda models and now reply also to Mitac releasing a competitor for the Mio710. We can say that this model is a valid alternative if you need a GPS enabled phone otherwise, as the model is based on the M600, the last is better as you get WiFi also that is instead missing in the G500 model.
