ARTEMIS (P3300) The Magician's Heir
(I.E. the New Generation) Previously to link to this page shown you a different content. A page created to register all the news about Pda/phone model to find an heir for the, now old, winning model named HTC Magician (and its all different brands) That model was the first to be a real pda but to offer also an easy use and dimensions to compete with a cellular phone. From the launch of the Magician, many different models have been delivered (you can find HERE in the previously shown page a list and some information) anyone with such characteristic to be considered as the heir of the real first pda/phone model . Between the HTC and the others Brand models we can find units sporting sliding full qwerty or GPS or more connections up to the UMTS (3G). Checking them, on the first time, the htc Trinity model was a potential following to the Magician. At the end of the games i established to consider the real heir the model Artemis instead of the Trinity. This page was born to collect any information, details, dedicated program available for the HTC Artemis that producer commercialized under the name HTC P3300. At the same time we shall try to explain to the reader why i consider the P3300 a better heir than other models WELL, WE CAN START The unit looks as you see here:![]()
From the above pictures it is possible to take note that the unit has a quite squared form but the rounded edges allows device to be handled easily. A bit of rubber cover on the sides could offer a best grip to use the device while you push the chromed side-buttons but it is not a great problem. The image on the center shows the command button set, rollerpad included. It is curious to see that the model previewed before the launch had the positions of buttons reversed. The final choice reveals itself better to use the device by a single hand even if not all the operations are so easy. The back of the unit

does not offer many elements. Just the camera objective, the small mirror for self portrait that can be used as button to open the battery place and, on the top a long cover that hides to plugs for external antennas if any. The top of the device does not show anything of important except the open of the speaker (and it is worth do not cover the top of the unit that contains the internal antennas. The unit's bottom instead is a bit more crowed. You cam see the open for the microphone, the stylus place on the right side and the mini USB connector that has a particular design as it is also used to connect audio earpieces. Here is a comparative table of the possible pda to consider rivals for the designed heir

Starting from the original Magician model and looking for the model that stores more features into reduced dimensions and weight, it appears clearly that the P3300 gets the best result. We are talking of few millimeters and grams but the model in question offers pda programs Gps, Phone capacities up to Edge and FM radio. The other models even if can perform the same services are worst dimensionally speaking. Yes the P3600 offers UMTS (that is anyway only a type of phone connection) but the GPS service has not already been activated officially.

If it is so, we can start to use your new toy. To Begin to use your P3300 you need two things. A SIM activated (very old Sims at 8k or similar could be not recognized) and, suggested even if optional, a microSD. In this case the better is to use from the starting a card with the highest capacity 1GB,2GB and if possible a 4GB also (reported somewhere to work if not of the SDHC type). I suggest you the above owing to the following reasons: Unbox your device and open, on the back, the same to access to battery place and you will find there the SIM holder and, under this, the microSD slot. This last one is under a cover to close to maintain the card in its place. (You can see below an explaining image)![]()
![]()
As you can see the inserted SIM cover the card slot and this creates two difficulties. The first is that you will be unable to change your memory card on the fly as you will need to power off the device, extract the battery, unlock the Sim, open the slot to change the microSD and obviously to repeat all the mentioned actions in the reversed order. (Fortunately the device does not least data when the battery power is missing) The second is that the operation to insert memory card and SIM to lock are quite delicate because if the card or the relative cover have not been closed correctly the SIM even if apparently locked does not match with its contacts correctly so that, after installing battery and closed the back, you may receive, switching on the Pda, the error advice of SIM missing or similar. The difficulties that user can meet as shown above have been considered as a defect for this device. It is true that the original Magician offered to the user, with a standard SD slot, the possibility to handle this matter easily. We have anyway to remember that the TransFlash cards (later named microSD) were born to be used like the internal memory of the PC (i.e to put them in to increase internal device memory if any and not as a mobile HD). A project respecting the original use may be now appear as a defect being now the microSD used like the biggest SD were used. There are two things more to do, before using without problem your P3300, but usually any other pda/phone. *WARNING: Firms and/or products here or in other part of this page quoted have been mentioned without any publicity purpose or to consider items better then others. The firms have been linked without any author's interest or connection with them. Anyone can finds others products surfing Internet. Get a screen protector as your device could be used in many case without the stylus and it is better to protect the screen accordingly. Even if you may think that the included cover for the device is correct for you, consider also to buy a better cover that, among the other thing, can offer you a better way to hold the device. Leather Cover : Pielframa (The state of art but i do not like the separate stylus holder) Covertec (Like the previous one but held the device with the half part of the cover) Proporta (the unit is quite free in the cover that is not so thin as could be) Designio (As above too many cover's accessories makes the full pack not so thin) Alluminium Cover: Armor Proporta (a good protection for the unit but, perhaps, not so efficient for the phone use) Flexy Skin : Boxwave (it is surely a light cover but i am still unable to evaluate its protection) HOW the P3300 interact with you The first communication about what your device is doing come for you from the Leds-bar on top/front of the device. Here is a visual translations of the signals'meaning:
Charging
End of Charge
Alert advice
Phone active (left led)
Bluetooth active
WiFi active
GPS active The second interactive channel is for the P3300 not only the stylus (that is anyway available on the right side sliding from the bottom of the unit) but also the RollR(tmd) and the command to drive the arrow on the screen as happens usually with a PC mouse.
This new control adds to the Pda the possibility for a single hand control as well a playing game control. For both these abilities i think that user will require some time to learn the correct use. The command, for somebody, feels to quick and sensible so that may be difficult to play some games otherwise someone find it very useful to surf internet. You must understand that you may use the control in 2 different ways. The first, moving the chromed ring, moves accordingly the highlighted area on the various selecting points of the current screen (to complete selection using OK or by the central Enter button). For the second you have to activate the Mouse function (by a Tap on the arrow you see in the Today screen). This will enable you to use the central button as a Joy stick to navigate the screen (while pressing it you confirm the selected action pointed by the arrow) exactly as using a mouse. For information only* the registry key that control this last function is HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCCPL\Applet8 . Do not modify anything if you do not know well what you are doing and/or you have a real trouble to use 'Mouse' THE PROGRAMS: by default, to add, suggested You can said, without any doubt, that this device offers a rich set of programs. Surely for the P3300 you find more programs than the ones available on the Magician. The difference is due to the choices of the HTC but also to the O.S WM 5.0 that includes better programs and services for the Office set and Control Managers related to some functions. In a quick resuming list the default programs are the following: Organizer and standard applications for Windows Mobile
ZIP - allows working with archives on the device
MIDlet Manager - loads and starts Java-applications
ClearVue PDF to view PDF documents
Recorder, Date, time, world time, Alarm clock, stopwatch, reminders, timer, calculator To the above programs we have to add, available on CD, 2 others useful utilities: Sprite Backup (with WM 5.0 data and programs remain correctly stored even if the pda's battery go down anyway a current BackpUp may be useful in any case. The program you find is considered a a good program to save data, automatically also.) It is possible to see the official Demo HERE Sbp GPRS Monitor (a good utility to check the connection use, particularly if you use it rarely or you do not have a Flat connection with your provider.) It is possible to see the official Demo HERE As soon as you learned all you need about the default and additional programs (do not forget that the better source of informations is the P3300 Manual and thence the various FAQS that are available on the HTC Site) we can think to add some other program and, better, if it is usefull and Free. PROGRAMS FREE (not all programs has been tested when posted so you use them at your own risk) OperaMini 3.0 This mini browser appera not dedicated to the HTC P3300, as you do not find it into the program's compatibily list but, as i used it on the old S100 (Magician) i wanted to load this application on its heir also. To do this i downloaded the version for the Qtek S200 as that model has Cpu and caractheristcs similar to the P3300. So you can dowload the files from the above linked page, transfer them on the memeory card (for example) and using the MIDlet Manager install Opera on the device. Bedore to use it i suggest to execute a soft reset.(i needed it to make it to run correctly) SMS Scheduler a program to send your sms, without limits, on the time you wish and notify you when message has been sent SMS backup This is a program to backup and restore SMS (only)messages on a windows mobile (5.0) iContacts Adds Touch Scrolling to Windows Mobile Contacts allowing for this function someting like the control by finger of the coming iPhone Skype I read many times that this program had some problems to run on the P3300. I found that it is now available to download a dedicated version for this device and i noted that can be loaded on a memory card also. Why do not give it a trial.
